With the Cadre Noir equestrian display team, its château and its wine, there are already plenty of reasons to visit Saumur — but with the summer sunshine comes that little something extra. Just 15 minutes from the Château Le Prieuré, the town in Maine-et-Loire is hosting a wide range of events for all ages this summer.
The entertaining program is called “Effervescences” and runs until the end of August. With more than 100 events, Saumur’s festival includes all the arts, turning each day into a celebration in the summer heat. The program is an ode to music with more than 35 concerts. Gypsy jazz, French songs, classical music, DJ sets, 70s and 80s rock: this eclectic, festive selection has something for everybody. The town is also set to host open-air film screenings for all with a giant screen. Cartoons, science fiction and comedy: Saumur is putting on quite a show. Evening markets in the town centre are the perfect opportunity to pick up local crafts and regional products while Brazilian percussion plays in the background. Local producers and delicious delights from the region will be waiting from 6pm to 11pm on July 24 and August 21 for two gourmet evenings which will also feature “Charcuterie Musicale”, a crazy, larger-than-life group which challenges visitors to guess the song. Street art hasn’t been forgotten either. Circus performances, juggling, street theatre and wooden games encourage passers-by to slow down and enjoy fun, mind-boggling shows. Anyone who likes to feel a chill down their spine should head to the Château for a blood-curdling evening. “Horror Night” is sure to terrify: enjoy that feeling of goose bumps with a screening of the horror film “REC”, an evening visit to the château and its village of terror. If you’re looking for something tasty, try the “7 summer evenings, 7 AOC” wine-tasting sessions which include some of Saumur’s best wines. “Effervescences” is sure to cause a stir all over town. On August 11 and 12, the Château du Rivau in Lémeré will welcome horses for its impressive jousts and medieval shows. The Château de Gizeux is organising guided tours with the opportunity for visitors to dress up. With thousands of events, Saumur is here to entertain this summer. Enjoy yourself: treat yourself to a unique stay at the Château Le Prieuré, with its panoramic view of the Loire, its great facilities (grounds, mini golf, tennis and basketball courts) and its gourmet restaurant Le Castellane.
