As night falls in the Loire Valley during the summer, its châteaux light up. The region shows off its cultural heritage as part of France’s long tradition of son et lumière shows, playing with light and shadow to create carefully worked evening shows which focus on history. You’ll love watching them while staying at the Château de Beauvois.
Enjoy a night-time visit of the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, every evening until 31 August! Visitors will be stunned into silence by the imposing beauty of the building: come and admire this Renaissance gem in the moonlight. Beautifully and discreetly lit up, the grounds, château and reflection pools are shown off in all their splendor in the gentle glow of summer nights. The château can be visited in the evening as a private home and visitors are welcome to wander around until 11pm.
Nearby, the Château de Villandry will celebrate its “Nights of a thousand lights” at 8.45pm on 3 and 4 August. Lit up by some 2,000 candles, the gardens’ geometric patterns and the carefully chiseled details of the facades will dance in a delicate chiaroscuro: pure poetry. Projected murals, costumed figures around the grounds and a magnificent pyrotechnic show are set to make this the unmissable event of the summer.
At the Château d’Amboise, enjoy making a 450-year leap back in time to the court of Charles VIII, where you’ll learn about the fate of Louise de Savoie, mother of Francis I, the future king of France. A new generation son et lumière show, alternating multimedia sequences and epic scenes featuring 250 people, “the Amboise prophecy” is a breathtaking immersive experience. You’ll want to see it again and again – and you can, with several dates in July and August.
10 miles from Tours, the Scénoféerie show at Semblançay is superlative. It’s an extraordinary evening show featuring 450 actors, stuntmen and horsemen and sees a grandfather telling his grandson the story of a legend which spans the centuries, from the Gallo-Roman era to the French Revolution. With more than 2,000 costumes and a series of impressively realistic scenes, you’ll love the Scénoféerie show at Semblançay: the perfect opportunity to experience time travel, with several dates in July and August.
